Silicones in Skin Care: What They Do and Why We UseThem
The word ‘silicone’ can carry strong opinions in skin care.
Matera Nourishing Stretch Mark Cream contains dimethicone and dimethiconol.
We include them as functional ingredients within the complete formula because they contribute to texture, skin feel and the performance of the finished cream.
That may sound different from the botanical story associated with pregnancy body care, but the two do not need to be opposites.
Matera combines botanical oils, butters and extracts with skin-supporting actives and formulation ingredients when each has a clear purpose.
Silicones are not added so we can make a ‘silicone’ claim.
They are there because they contribute to how the formula behaves and feels on the skin.
This is also why Matera does not formulate around broad rules such as ‘natural good, synthetic bad’.
An ingredient’s origin is only one piece of information.
Its function, amount, quality, application and role in the complete finished formula matter too.
For us, transparency means explaining the ingredients people may question as clearly as the ingredients people already recognise.
If something is in a Matera formula, we should be able to explain why.
